Just a few years back, this mesmerizing waterfall that resembles a bride in a wedding gown with a full skirt gazing over her shoulder and a veil gracefully spread out over her upper body was unknown to many.
The captivating waterfall known as La Cascada de la Novia (The Bride’s Waterfall) located in Cajamarca, Peru has become a viral sensation, gaining over 1.6 million views on Twitter. As a result, it has now become the latest tourist attraction and a precious gem for the Celendin and Cajamarca regions.
The waterfall gets its name from its unique shape, resembling that of a bride wearing a wedding dress and veil. The 165-foot (50-meter) tall natural wonder descends down the cliffside in a manner that enchantingly conjures up the image of a human figure standing tall against the dark rock.
According to Tourism in Peru, the village of Vizcampa in the province of CelendÃn, Cajamarca region boasts a stunning waterfall that was hidden from public knowledge until 2017. It was not until human rights professor Gustavo Vela posted a video on Twitter that this natural wonder gained international recognition.
Aside from its natural beauty, La Cascada de la Novia is also steeped in local legends and traditions. One legend states that the waterfall formed when a young couple fell in love, but their families were against their union. In an act of defiance, the couple decided to run away together but tragically died in a ravine on the mountain where the waterfall now stands. It is said that since that day, the water flows in a strange language, describing the fiancée and drawing her with her wedding dress and veil, ready to get married.
The deep natural formation known as the Pachachaca tunnel features evidence of stalactites. Upon entering through its small mouth and navigating two curves, one finds themselves inside a 100-foot (30-meter) long underground cavern that connects to the Veil of the Bride. Some may even call it “the tunnel of the bride,” a title reserved for the most daring adventurers.
La Cascada de la Novia is a breathtaking sight that should not be missed when traveling to Peru. It’s a destination that is well worth a visit. The best time to go is between December and May, when the flow is greater. You’ll be amazed by this magical waterfall and it is sure to leave you in awe.
